It has taken a lot of mangling, bug fixing, and even some new features, but I have finally got xrenmilay’s excellent keep model into the system. Here is a view in sear of the keep placed in a quiet valley in Moraf, just to the east of the pig sty.

There are still some client bugs to be fixed before this works reliably, and lots of work to get the rest of the castle components loading okay. With any luck it can be ready in time for LinuxTag. We need to think carefully about a setting too. I am thinking about creating a land mass to the west of the area used for the current demo, and make this area the city port from which settlers leave in order to sail to Moraf, which is currently unsettled. Let me know if you have any ideas.

As far as interiors of buildings are concerned, we still have a long way to go with the technology before its possible to navigate around inside buildings. We’ll get working on this as soon as the current work on tasks and combat systems. Please be patient with us for now.

There has been a lot of activity on the Sear front since the last release. Most importantly, long standing rotation bugs have been fixed which now allows access to the buildings in the village and allows correct rendering of items such as a lit torch. Previously entering a building had unpredictable results and wielding the torch did not render the fire.
The Cal3D goblin by Damien has been added to sear-media and a new combat animation by munin has been added to malebuilder model. These media updates are available to the current release of Sear by using WFUT to update the media.

The inventory dialog has now been updated to stack items with the same name instead of showing a separate entry for each item.
In other news, the first stage of an overhaul in the rendering code has nearly been finished. A common Static/Dynamic Object class has been created to separate individual mesh loading and animating from the rendering process. The next stage is to use these directly in the render queue (instead of the models as a whole) and sort into a more efficient rendering order. As always, nightly builds of development Sear for Linux and Windows are available through WFUT on the sear-devel-linux and sear-devel-win32 channels.

Other GUI components allow adjusting key bindings and video modes. Two new console commands have been added. /me for emotes and /eat (added to inventory dialog) to nourish our character. Other changes include updating to Eris 1.3.10 API, using builtin Eris ops instead of sear custom ones for use, wield, create etc, and numerous stability and code improvements.

Looking at the logs on some of the WorldForge game servers made available for public use, I have noticed many errors from users trying to create characters of types which do not exist. Examples include human, knight, dwarf and elf. Clearly given the number of errors we have made a serious mistake in the user interface provided in sear for creating characters, in that it provides no guidance on what types are acceptable.

The only character type currently supported on servers is settler. This is described in the Sear Quickstart Guide but buried a little too deep for most people to spot. If you have been having difficulty creating a character, please accept my apologies for this shortcoming in the user interface, and give it one more try. The development code has already been updated to be more helpful, and the next release will feature this as well as many other improvements that make sear easier to use.

Following some final packaging improvements, Sear 0.6.0 is now officialy available for OS-X from the
download pages. This release works on all versions of Tiger (10.4) and the most recent release of Panther (10.3.9) – earlier versions of OS-X are not supported. Please post any feedback or bug reports in this forum thread, or on IRC.

Becuase numerous packaging and build issues have been worked-through and resolved in the course of this release, future binary releases should require very little additional work, and should appear very soon after the official tarballs.
